Joshua 2:1-24 KJV

And Joshua the son of Nun sent out of Shittim two men to spy secretly, saying, Go view the land, even Jericho. And they went, and came into an harlot’s house, named Rahab, and lodged there.

And it was told the king of Jericho, saying, Behold, there came men in hither to night of the children of Israel to search out the country.

And the king of Jericho sent unto Rahab, saying, Bring forth the men that are come to thee, which are entered into thine house: for they be come to search out all the country.

And the woman took the two men, and hid them, and said thus, There came men unto me, but I wist not whence they were:

And it came to pass about the time of shutting of the gate, when it was dark, that the men went out: whither the men went I wot not: pursue after them quickly; for ye shall overtake them.

But she had brought them up to the roof of the house, and hid them with the stalks of flax, which she had laid in order upon the roof.

And the men pursued after them the way to Jordan unto the fords: and as soon as they which pursued after them were gone out, they shut the gate.

And before they were laid down, she came up unto them upon the roof;

And she said unto the men, I know that the Lord hath given you the land, and that your terror is fallen upon us, and that all the inhabitants of the land faint because of you.

10 For we have heard how the Lord dried up the water of the Red sea for you, when ye came out of Egypt; and what ye did unto the two kings of the Amorites, that were on the other side Jordan, Sihon and Og, whom ye utterly destroyed.

11 And as soon as we had heard these things, our hearts did melt, neither did there remain any more courage in any man, because of you: for the Lord your God, he is God in heaven above, and in earth beneath.

12 Now therefore, I pray you, swear unto me by the Lord, since I have shewed you kindness, that ye will also shew kindness unto my father’s house, and give me a true token:

13 And that ye will save alive my father, and my mother, and my brethren, and my sisters, and all that they have, and deliver our lives from death.

14 And the men answered her, Our life for yours, if ye utter not this our business. And it shall be, when the Lord hath given us the land, that we will deal kindly and truly with thee.

15 Then she let them down by a cord through the window: for her house was upon the town wall, and she dwelt upon the wall.

16 And she said unto them, Get you to the mountain, lest the pursuers meet you; and hide yourselves there three days, until the pursuers be returned: and afterward may ye go your way.

17 And the men said unto her, We will be blameless of this thine oath which thou hast made us swear.

18 Behold, when we come into the land, thou shalt bind this line of scarlet thread in the window which thou didst let us down by: and thou shalt bring thy father, and thy mother, and thy brethren, and all thy father’s household, home unto thee.

19 And it shall be, that whosoever shall go out of the doors of thy house into the street, his blood shall be upon his head, and we will be guiltless: and whosoever shall be with thee in the house, his blood shall be on our head, if any hand be upon him.

20 And if thou utter this our business, then we will be quit of thine oath which thou hast made us to swear.

21 And she said, According unto your words, so be it. And she sent them away, and they departed: and she bound the scarlet line in the window.

22 And they went, and came unto the mountain, and abode there three days, until the pursuers were returned: and the pursuers sought them throughout all the way, but found them not.

23 So the two men returned, and descended from the mountain, and passed over, and came to Joshua the son of Nun, and told him all things that befell them:

24 And they said unto Joshua, Truly the Lord hath delivered into our hands all the land; for even all the inhabitants of the country do faint because of us.

I Am Watching

The TENTH Devotional Journal, Day 2

Greetings!

Good Morning Father! Good Morning Jesus! Good Morning Holy Spirit! Good morning friends! I am currently writing a devotional called, “The Tenth.” Yesterday we asked the questions, “What is a tenth of a life? AND Can you give GOD that tenth?”

Now that you are available to spend some time with God every day, today we will discover the Biblical watchman and what is required to achieve more than nothing. Why would we look at a zero level of progress? Because we are more likely to do something different when we understand the consequence of doing nothing.

Prayer Point

Abba! Thank you for the wisdom to rightly divide your WORD of TRUTH. Open the eyes of my heart to see you clearly in everything I encounter. Teach me to find your good and your will and to resist anything that is not like you. Though the enemy come at me one way, make him flee seven ways according to your word. In JESUS’ name, AMEN.

Spotlight: The Watchwoman On The Wall

Now that Moses God’s servant is dead, Joshua is commissioned to lead the Israelites into the promised land. This great number of people are the remnant and descendants delivered forty (40) years earlier from four-hundred (400) years of bondage in slavery under the rulership that began with the Egyptian Pharaoh, Seti I (reigned 1318–04) and ended with Ramses II (c. 1304–c. 1237).

Joshua sent two spies to stake out the promised land, a city called, Jericho. The two men found favor in the house of Rahab, a harlot whose house was built atop the city wall. Have you been positioned on the wall – the first line of defense against the enemy?

When I was 23 years old, the Word of the Lord came to me like Ezekiel 33:7. God said, “… I have set thee a watchman…”

While it might have been considered uncouth, or unclean, Rahab had a thriving business and enough space to hide the spies. Why did she not fear to not tell the King of Jericho’s men where the Israelite spies were? Why didn’t she break down and cry and witness falsely against them, saying that they threatened her and came in by force and she could not restrain them? Somehow, Rahab had the instinct to recognize that God was moving against Jericho; and that if she and her family should be spared, now was the time to act on their behalf.

Just because someone’s lifestyle does not agree with what I think a believer should look like, does not mean that person can not be used by God.

When the King’s messengers or warriors inquired of the spies’ whereabouts, Rahab had not yet spoken to them concerning the reward for keeping them hidden from the King. How did she know that the spies would agree to save her and her family alive? Rahab understood that the Israelites were blessed by God. She confessed that the God of the Israelites was the true God of heaven and earth. She must have believed that being a blessing to them would sow a seed of safety for her house. And she was right.

What “house” have you been in that spared your life even though you despised it? Did you have strict parents, or a praying grandmother, or a no-nonsense athletic coach? God brings people into your life for two reasons: either you have something they need, or they have something you need. If you do not see the need, most often the need is someone to “watch” and pray.

The spies made a covenant with Rahab, that in exchange for her deed of safety toward them, they would not destroy her family and all that they had when the men returned with the armies of the Israelites to take the city.

Rahab gave the spies some advice as they prepared to leave Jericho quietly. She warned them that the King’s guards would be searching for them and that they should hide in the mountain. Rahab had to gather all of her family into her house, from whence they would be rescued when the men returned. Rahab’s advice helped the spies escape from Jericho without being noticed or overtaken.

Read Joshua 6:21-25 AMP

21 Then they utterly destroyed all that was in the city, both man and woman, young and old, ox, sheep, and donkey, with the edge of the sword.22 But Joshua said to the two men who had spied out the land, Go into the harlot’s house and bring out the woman and all she has, as you swore to her. 23 So the young men, the spies, went in and brought out Rahab, her father and mother, her brethren, and all that she had; and they brought out all her kindred and set them outside the camp of Israel. 24 And they burned the city with fire and all that was in it; only the silver, the gold, and the vessels of bronze and of iron they put into the treasury of the house of the Lord. 25 So Joshua saved Rahab the harlot, with her father’s household and all that she had; and she lives in Israel even to this day, because she hid the messengers whom Joshua sent to spy out Jericho.

Excerpt From “A Few Good Women“:

God can use you… [man or woman] to protect his investment. To fulfill his purpose. No matter what you may have done in your life, don’t ever think God can’t use you. The woman who hid the spies was one who may have been called the least of all sisters. She may have been called the chief of all sinners like Paul said that he was. If you had known about that woman in her day, about her lifestyle, you would likely have said she was not worthy to be God’s right hand; but if God can make a mule speak to save a man’s life, I know He can use a woman.

Remember that God looks at the heart of every person. We may have seen Rahab and thought that she was ordinary. But Joshua 2:15 says that Rahab was in a unique position to influence the outcome of a battle – to remove a stronghold that would make all the difference. The reason Rahab was able to let the spies down through a window of her house using a cord, was because,

“…her house was upon the town wall, and she dwelt upon the wall.”

The Fourth Watch

You do not need a special invitation to pray. God is inviting all of us, every day, to spend time with HIM.

The earnest (heartfelt, continued) prayer of a righteous man makes tremendous power available [dynamic in its working]. James 5:16b AMP

Based on the words of the spies, Joshua later commands that Jericho be destroyed, except for Rahab and all that are in her house. Thereafter, the Israelites possess the land as their own. A watchman is called to watch for the souls in the camp. He or she uses the power of prayer to break chains of bondage, dispatch heavenly forces, and thwart attacks of the enemy by advance warning. The “watch” I refer to is the first security system. There was no ADT in Joshua’s day, no Allstate, no cameras at the door. What the people had was a system of standing guard with rotations that changed every three hours.

In Biblical Roman times, they divided the hours of the night into three-hour intervals beginning at 6 PM. Thus, the first three watches of the night were 6 PM to 9 PM, 9 PM to 12 Midnight, and Midnight to 3 AM. The “Fourth Watch” was the last watch of the night, from 3 AM to 6 AM. The Jews adopt these divisions and set the guard in array.

Rather than waiting for a particularly hard question – when you are uncomfortable asking and not sure how God will respond, begin your watch prayer with the simple questions that you may already know the answer to, but would like to confirm. You will be learning to strike up and sustain a spiritual conversation – not a formal, un-inspired, scripted recital. A heartfelt, sincere, genuine conversation with a friend who is closer than a brother.

Even if you are unaccustomed to speaking to God in this way, this first experience does not have to be like the first conversation with a stranger. Think about it: God formed you in the womb – and before that, HE still knew you. He has known you for your entire existence. HE is not a stranger.

One of the most important reasons to start watching in prayer, is because Satan learned a long time ago that utterly destroying people is not necessary for him to filibuster. He gets more mileage out of your distraction than by annihilating you – because distracted people help others to also get off course. If Satan would just get rid of you, he would lose destructive potential. HE needs a body to pour his evil spirits into. Without a body, his presence is illegal on earth according to the order of partnership that GOD has ordained. A spirit must have a body to possess.

Satan only needs to distract you enough to keep you busy with sidebars: busybody work, which will deter you from finding your purpose and fulfilling it. Edmund Burke said it best,

All that is necessary for the triumph of evil is that good men do nothing.

While you are distracted, the enemy will get focused on isolating you. The enemy’s strategy for your defeat is to divide and conquer, but God works in unity. Not only is God there in the midst where two or three are gathered in His name; He said that one could set one thousand [evil ones] to flight, but two could send ten thousand packing. There is power in unity with the Holy Spirit of God.

Focusing through prayer will help you to identify distractions before they become habits that devour your time and do not nurture the spirit from God within you.

Read James 5:13-18 and Ephesians 6:10-18. Whether you spend an hour or a second on any occupation, you can never get that moment or group of moments back because time is fleeting and irreplaceable. In other words, your time is priceless. Allotting such a hot commodity may require changing your comfortable routines. God is looking for someone with uncommon faith, to bless and equip for HIS mission of saving the world. If a fourth-watch prayer life is unfamiliar to you, here are some ways to get started.

  1. Prepare your heart to commune with God. Psalm 100 is one of my favorite passages of scripture. Psalm 100 directs you in how to come before the presence of God. You are to approach Him with the sacrifice of thanksgiving, with a heart full of gladness, with praises unto Him, and by blessing His name.
    a. Listen to or sing songs of praise to God.
    b. Read scriptures that praise God.
  2. Thank God for anything you feel grateful for. A grateful heart gets God’s attention. Remember that God made people for His own glory. You were created to praise God. When you thank God for what He has done, what He is doing, and what He will do, you speak to the very core of His omnipotence. God can do anything – and He can do everything.
  3. Be totally honest with God. God already knows your situation including every part that is “complicated.” Thus, there is no reason to be pretentious with Him.
  4. Repent and ask for forgiveness. I also pray for remission of sins.
    a. Apologize for any wrong you know you have committed; and ask forgiveness.
    b. Even if you know you have lived salvation to the best of your ability , it is yet good to ask God to forgive anything that may have offended someone, although it was not your intent to injure their feelings.
  5. Accept Jesus as your Savior, if you have not already done so. God loved you so much that He gave His only begotten Son to redeem you unto Himself. Christ’s resurrection is also your victory []. Salvation is a gift that you must choose to receive.
  6. Ask God to guard all communication to you, from you, around you and concerning you, to protect your mind from doubt and any attack of the enemy.
  7. Ask God to renew your mind as you submit your body and life as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable unto God.

I appeal to you therefore, brethren, and beg of you in view of [all] the mercies of God, to make a decisive dedication of your bodies [presenting all your members and faculties] as a living sacrifice, holy (devoted, consecrated) and well pleasing to God, which is your reasonable (rational, intelligent) service and spiritual worship. Do not be conformed to this world (this age), [fashioned after and adapted to its external, superficial customs], but be transformed (changed) by the [entire] renewal of your mind [by its new ideals and its new attitude], so that you may prove [for yourselves] what is the good and acceptable and perfect will of God, even the thing which is good and acceptable and perfect [in His sight for you]. Romans 12:1-2 AMP

  1. Ask God to speak to you from His heart and to reveal to you His purpose for your life.
  2. Ask God to help you to recognize His voice and leading, so that when He is trying to communicate with you, you will know it is His influence and will respond accordingly. Knowing God’s voice and recognizing the leading of His Holy Spirit are two of the most important parts of being a woman of purpose. To be a woman of purpose means to follow God’s will in your womanhood and in everything that affects your womanhood quadrant – womanhood, sisterhood, motherhood, and ministry.
  3. Ask God to confirm His directions to you. He will provide witnesses. There are few things more damaging to purpose than misdirection. You want to avoid putting much effort in a wrong place. Detours can cost you time, money, influence, and more. Better to get a confirmation than to tire out on a dead end. Save your strength for the right course. Whilst you wait for direction, stand still on major decisions if possible. If you must proceed without prior confirmation, pray for grace and peace. Follow peace when there is any question of what to do []. God is the author of peace, whereas Satan is the author of confusion. Following the spirit of peace is following the Spirit of God.
  4. Continue in prayer daily, even after you know what your purpose is. Knowing your purpose does not mean that you should stop praying about it. Knowledge of your purpose should allow you to pray more specifically.
